Welcome

Welcome to Polygraphía Press, a small boutique press specialising in publishing visual and material culture.

It is currently publishing its first project, Paperweight: A Newspaper of Visual and Material Culture, issues of which can be purchased through our online shop.

What is visual and material culture?

Visual culture focusses on how meaning is at once expressed and structured through vision and visuality. It stretches from art and design history, through to film, media and television studies, with frequent appearances in the history of science and technology, with an aim to explode our sense that what we see is straightforward, uncomplicated, easy.

Material culture is concentrated on how material objects are meaningful, whether that be historical or theoretical, or both. Drawing on the work of design history and theory, anthropology and museum studies, amongst others, its focus is to attempt to pick apart the object to find out how our social and cultural relations have been and are formed through material forms.

Who are we looking to work with? And how?

Polygraphía Press seeks to work with authors, writers, designers and artists to forge new models of publishing, through a more collaborative approach and ethic than traditional publishing offers.

We seek to publish innovative and engaging work in innovative and engaging forms by authors whose projects slip through the boundaries of the traditional publishing hierarchies. This includes the work of emerging scholars, interdisciplinary projects or projects normally considered to be of too small a scale.

We are interested in receiving proposals for publishing projects, printed or digital, static or otherwise, especially those for short texts (circa. 25,000 words) in visual and material culture.
